Finished!

July 19th, 2008

Ok, so I really finished them a week ago. Shush.  Overall, I am very pleased. Adding the extra cuff repeat was definitely the way to go. Of course, because I’m trying to take pictures of my own feet, that part of the picture was fuzzy. But trust me, good call.

Feets!

And, unlike the last pair I knit for myself, these ones actually fit! No baggy toes, no narrow heels. My feet are in love.

Toes

Sadly, my opinion of the yarn, Wollmeise, didn’t improve after knitting the first sock. The yarn is ridiculously prone to tangling, and splits like crazy. It makes me wonder what kind of crack people are on when they stay up all night hitting F5 trying to snag some. Don’t get me wrong. The colors are beyond reproach, and it’s a quality that seems to be pretty consistent in all of Claudia’s colorways. I’ve got a couple other skeins of this stuff that I’m not planning on parting with, and if I stumble across some elsewhere, I’m certainly not going to snub my nose. I’m just not going to drive myself to a murderous rampage in search of a yarn base that makes me go, “Eh.”

I may need to see if I can trade off one of my 100% wool skeins for a skein of the 20/80 blend, and see if that’s any better.

Next on the menu is Irtfaa’s Shawl, a knit spot pattern. The pattern is 13 flippin’ pages and, to be honest, after reading over it, I think it’s probably the most challenging thing I’ve tried to knit yet.

Grumpy Cthulhu says… “Gnargh. Don’t fit. Rarrrr.”

Pillars of Fire

June 30th, 2008

I’ve finally made enough progress on my Pillars of Fire socks to have something to report.

Pillars of Fire

I’m loving the pattern. It’s easy to follow, easy to memorize and very…. flowy. It practically crawls up the foot. Not in a creepy crawly way, but in a sexy, sensual way. Because socks? Can totally be sexy. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: If you haven’t already, check out Terry Ross Designs. She’s got some fantastic patterns up for grabs, many of which will work well for varigated yarns.

However, while I’m diggin’ the pattern, I’m a bit torn on the yarn. Maybe it’s because all the hype about the Wollmeise has raised by expectations to unreasonable heights. I can’t say a thing against the colors. They’re incredible. The more I knit, the more I like it. The colors flow and blend perfectly. I don’t like red, but I like this. That should really say it all. I also like the way the fabric is knitting up, firm but flexible, and I have high hopes that it will soften up quite a bit when washed. When these are said and done, they should be fantastic on the feet.

However, there’s something to be said for how a yarn feels while you’re knitting. The biggest reason I don’t ever knit with acrylic? Because I can’t stand how it feels on my hands. I’m finding the Wollmeise to be incredibly cottony, and hard on my hands. Not acrylic hard, but not as soft as I would expect from 100% wool. As I knit, I find myself just slathering my hands in lotion. (Cozy Stitches, by the way, has some fantastic crafter’s lotion. I highly recommend it.) Also, the yarn splits like crazy. I keep sticking the needle through the plies, and then end up having to pull it out and try and get everything all straightened out so I can get my needle in the right way. At one point, I found myself considering gnawing through some of the plies just so I wouldn’t have to deal with untangling everything.

Overall, I’ll definitely be knitting with this again - it’s just too beautiful not to - but I’m probably going to be darn cranky with it half the time.

I kind of wish I had more to report in regards to photos, especially since I’m learning to use the camera and taking most of the shots myself. However, my Dream in Color Baby should be showing up later this week, and then I plan on casting on for Irtfa’s Shawl. And then, and then my friends, we will be swimming in pictures.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for rouge Hounds of Tindalos. I discovered today the my own dear Fluffy has a sweet tooth for socks.

Socks… and then more socks…

June 25th, 2008

It’s all socks, all the time here at Sheep Geek Central. I’ll be starting another lace project once the Dream in Color Baby comes back into stock, but in the meantime, let me show you some socks.

The Bellamoden sportweight socks are finish, and have been for about a week. They’re currently off to their new home.

Bellamoden Socks1

The yarn knit up beautifully. It’s very smooshy and sproing-y, which, for me, is huge. The twist could have been a little tighter, but, even so, the yarn wasn’t splitty at all. You can get Bellamoden’s yarn at The Loopy Ewe. And, probably, some other places. I wouldn’t know. *grins*

Close Up Bellamoden

The only complaint, is that the stitch pattern didn’t show up very well. This pattern, Making Tracks by Wendy Johnson, really needs either a solid yarn, or a lighter yarn. Sadly, I love dark purple. Still, while not very defined, the stitch pattern does offer some extra texture to the yarn.

Snuggles Socks

Snuggles thinks they’re plenty warm and comfy. And that’s what counts.

And, being that I’m not doing sweaters for a while and I’m waiting on my laceweight yarn,  I’ve started another pair of socks. This one is for the Summer Red Knit-A-Long, being hosted ove at The Loopy Groopies board on Ravelry. (Of course, if you’re not on Ravelry, those links won’t do you a darn bit of good.)

Pillars of Fire

The pattern is Pillars of Fire (yet another Ravelry link), by Terry Ross, and the yarn… oh, the yarn. It’s Pillars of Fire by Wollmeise. That highly coveted, ultra-rare, incredibly gorgeous stuff done up by Claudia out of Germany. I managed to snag this stuff by being part of the Loopy Ewe Sock Club, and while I’m not normally a fan of red, I’m loving how this is knitting up.  It’s a pretty subtle shift between red and orange. On the ball, it looks like it would be overly… stripey. But, surprisingly, it’s hardly striping at all, subtle shifting around like, well, a pillar of fire.

Kiki Socks

Kiki, Minion of Darkness, is also liking the sock pattern. Of course, about half a lace repeat after I took that picture, I discovered that my gauge was a bit too loose and the socks weren’t gonna fit.

*makes very unhappy grumbling noises*

All Hail Lovely Roommate aka Agatha Redux

June 22nd, 2008

Appalled by the poor quality of my pictures, Lovely Roommate has taken it upon himself to improve my journal’s photography. This is made easier by the fact that he has a Nikon D40X, and I do not.

So, I give you the Agatha Shawl, Take Two!

Shawl

I am quite proud of it. Also, with the better camera, you can also get a good look at the stitching and patterning.

Close-Up Shawl

Ninja shawl!

Ninja Shawl

In non-shawl related news, I’ve finished the Bellamoden socks. However, since they’re part of my Loopy Swap package, which is getting mailed tomorrow, I won’t be posting pictures until then.  In the meantime, Snuggles guards the package with his life.

Agatha Shawl

June 18th, 2008

Today we discover just how bad the lighting inside my house is. Obviously, I need a better flash. But in the meantime, we’ll make do with what I’ve got.

And what I’ve got is this:

Shawl Blocked 1

That would be the Agatha shawl in the bowl from Monday. The pictures really don’t do it justice. At all.  The yarn used is Dream in Color Classy, purchased from The Loopy Ewe, in the color Some Summer Sky. The color varigations just shimmer across the lace pattern, accenting it nicely.

Close Up

The nice thing about this pattern is that, instead of focusing on the yarn-overs and decreases, the lace stitches actually accentuating the flowing section of stockinette.

Blocked 2

Also, it’s an uneven triangle pattern, which means the “arms” of the triangle are extra-long. Since it’s knit in a worsted weight yarn, this makes it perfect for wrapping around you on a cold night. Since this is a comfort shawl for a friend of mine battling an illness, it doesn’t get more right.

Me being a dork

Sadly, the lighting thwarted any attempts get a decent pictures of the shawl “in use”. This is the best I got, thanks to my Lovely Roommate goofing off with the camera. (Oh, there will be vengence.)

Snuggles and Coffee

Finally, Snuggles is still refusing to model any of the Bellamoden socks. Instead he’s chilling at the coffee shop, eating my goodies.

And we’re back!

June 16th, 2008

So, after an incredibly, unreasonably long hiatus, The Sheep Geek is back up and running. For those wondering, we initially went down because of a server crash. And then there were vet school applications. And then I got into vet school. And then rabid monkeys ate my brain. It happens, ya know?

I had these amazing plans to re-open the blog with photos of a shawl I recently finished. Unfortunately, after I got it all nice and wet, I discovered I didn’t have enough blocking pins.

Shawl in Bowl

As you can see, it’s still sitting nicely in a bowl of water. Where it’s been all week. However, once I do get it blocked, I’m sure it will be lovely. It’s the Agatha Shawl, by ThatLoganChick Designs. Unfortunately, it appears the shawl pattern is no longer sold at her Etsy site, but only through Ravelry. Which sucks for those not yet part of the cult.

So, since I can’t show ya’ll the awesome shawl, I will instead show you my sock.

The Sock!

There it is. Isn’t it lovely. It’s the Making Tracks pattern, by Wendy Johnson. The pattern is available at The Loopy Ewe (like most of the knitting stuff I have lying around these days), as is the yarn - Bellamoden Sport in The Color Purple. You can also pick this stuff up at her Etsy store. I’m fantastically thrilled with the yarn. It’s gorgeous and springy and is knitting up beautifully at 6 stitches to the inch. My only complaint is that it’s not showing off the pattern as well as I’d like, but I think that’s more a case of a poor pairing on my part. The pattern, I think, would do better in either a solid or a striping yarn. And this is neither. Oh well

Sock 2.

You can see the pattern a bit better from the side. And, poorly matched or no, they’re still awesome.

Snuggles Shuns

I tried to get Snuggles to model it, but, faced with the daunting prospect of the Single Sock, he has shunned it. He promises to model it when I finish the mate. Cheeky bugger.

Angry Kitty

Also, I give you a shaved cat. Because I think it’s funny.

Yaaaaaaaaarn!

October 27th, 2007

So, if I’d been up-to-date in my blogging, instead of burying myself in running The Loopy Ewe Swap and trying to get the last of the reviews up for Classic-Horror.com’s Shocktober Classics event (including this fabulous, pun-tastic review of Black Sheep), I’d have mentioned that I received my Yarn Pirate Booty Club package.

Since we’re still trying to introduce the entire cast, I’ve asked Snuggles to model for me. There’s not much to say about Snuggles, except that he’s a Cthulhu and that he’s blue. Everyone should have a blue Cthulhu. Now, before we get to the really good stuff, Snuggles would like to show you the needles that came with the package:

Snuggles with Needles

Yup, those are bright, pink needles. I’m not too sure what I’m going to do with them, actually, since I don’t knit magic loop if I can help it, or if I have the option of stabbing my eye out with a fork. However, my Options set doesn’t go that low, so I’m going to hold onto it in case of lace emergencies. For those interested, I think she’s planning on selling them at her Etsy shop in the future.

The needles were awesome, but the highlight of the shipment was, of course, the yarn. This is my first Booty Club package, so I had no idea what to expect. Neither Snuggles or myself could contain our excitement!

Sniuggles with Yarn

Yup…. that’s it. The color is called Killer Bees and grey, black, yellow and, if you’re seeing what I’m seeing, lime green. Truthfully, I’m not sure what I think of this. I keep oscillating between incredulous and hopeful. However, there’s some interesting photographs at the Flickr group over here, so I’m going to wait until I actually knit something before I make a final judgment. I think these may be destined to be mitts, however, rather than socks. Here’s a closer look at the colors:

Killer Bees

In other exciting news, I have killed my first person… with socks!

Socks of War

The Sock Wars socks are finally finished and, since I didn’t make it to the post office on Friday, will be making it towards their New York target via First Class mail tomorrow. I know most people are sending them Priority, but I am poor and $3.00 buys a lot of ramen noodles. I also apologize for the picture quality, and the random appearance of Sassy’s right side. I can’t put them on to really show off the pattern, because, sadly, my target has freakishly small feet.

Wilbur isn’t too keen on socks, but that’s what he gets for thwarting my ingenious naming attempts and insisting he be called after some pig.

Wilbur

Grrrrrrrrraaargh! How do these things work? Brrrgh!

Rainbows and Eyeballs

October 12th, 2007

I continue to be a bit behind in my updating of this thing, but I have my excuses. In addition to the evils of O-Chem and Biochemistry, it is also October. Have I mentioned that I help run a horror film website? That makes October about 8 1/2 times more busy than any other month, especially when you consider that Classic-Horror.com is running a full month of reviews. It’s very impressive. You should go look. </shameless plug>

However, despite burying myself in Italian horror films, a few other things have happened. First, I started knitting the Eyeball Yarn (which the Moon Beast so lovingly modeled earlier this month), by Insubordiknit. This week we have Rainbow, Bringer of Evil, one of the many Cthulhu in the plushy army. here to model it for you.

Rainbow with Eyes

See how industriously he is working. As you can tell from the picture below, Rainbow, Bringer of Evil has gotten quite a bit done.

Cthulhu with lots of eyes

Take a closer look at those eyeballs. Aren’t they cool?

Cthulhu with big eyes

Unfortunately, for Rainbow, Bringer of Evil, he ran out of yarn. It seems, one skein of this stuff is not enough for a whole person-sized scarf. (It is, incidently, Rainbow, Bringer of Evil’s exact size.) I’ve got another skein on order, but the waiting list for this stuff keeps getting longer. I should have it in by Thanksgiving, but in the meantime, it goes in the Basket of Doom with all the other UFOs.

Cthulhu with Yarn

Rainbow, Bringer of Evil, has also offered to show you his favorite yarn in the stash, and the newest addition to the fiber collection. That is a skein of Spaghetti by, you guessed it, Chewy Spaghetti. It’s a sport weight yarn, and that lovely color is Boyish. I’m actually on a yarn diet, so I wasn’t going to buy any at the latest Sneak-Up over at The Loopy Ewe, but the Lovely Roommate took pity on me, and bought me some to ease the withdrawl pains. The Lovely Roommate is lovely indeed.

On the WIP front, all other projects have been set aside for Sock Wars. I have my target, I have my weapons, and I am on a path of destruction. I am, however, a bit behind the other soldiers. Many of them already have half a sock - I have this.

Sock Wars

Yup. That’s a ball of yarn (Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport, for those interested). I have a feeling I may be dead by this time next week. But at least I will have some warm socks.

Meet The Cast: Goth Cthulhu aka Sparkles

October 7th, 2007

I’ve been gone for about a week, thanks to the wonderful organic chemistry that has been eating my brain. Molecular Orbital Theory can bite me and then jump of a bridge. In that order. However, now that I’m back with a shiny A- on my exam, I’ve decided that I should introduce the Lovecraftian Plushie Army, who has been kind enough to star occassionally in the blog and model my knitting from time to time.

Being the oldest of the plushies, Sparkles Cthulhu is the Commander-in-Chief, General of the Plushie Army. He is also a creature of luxury, which is why, when asked to pick his favorite yarn from the stash, he has chosen this:

Cthulhu with Yarn

That is a skein of The Knittery Merino Cashmere Sock in Kelim, purchased from The Loopy Ewe. Sparkles has a soft-spot for cashmere. The colors are less blue and more purple, but the indoor lighting makes it difficult to photograph - either that or Sparkles’s dark might sucks the color out of the yarn.

He’s also chosen this scarf as his favorite UFO in the Basket of Doom,

Cthulhu with Scarf

It’s Mom’s Sophisticated Scarf from Stitch’N’Bitch, in Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk. I think it is the silk and the fact that it keeps his wings warm that is calling the Dark One, but it may also be the fact that this has been sitting in the UFO basket for 6 months, waiting for it’s ends to be woven in. Sparkles is not down with procrastination, which is why he is taking care of the O-Chem,

Cthulhu with OChem

And finishing my Lovely Roommate’s socks.

Cthulhu Knitting Socks

Mrrrrrrrrgh. Socks.

The Saga Continues

September 24th, 2007

So, I finally finished the first Stupid Sock, last night. I’ll be honest - at this point, I am knitting out of spite. This yarn refuses to bend to my will, I refuse to bend to it’s… yarnness. Only one will survive. And, at first glance, it appears to be me.

The Saga Continues - The Sock

The sock is knit using Duet Sock Yarn, from a Swell Yarn Shop in the color Deep Blue Sea. It’s sport-weight, knit on size 4 needles at a gauge of 6 stitches to the inch, and, at this gauge, is giving a thick, squishy fabric. It’s a little stiff, but I hope that will soften a bit in the wash. Also, as you can see, it is very busy and in plain stockinette because the stupid yarn refuses to do anything else.

Unfortunately, when I should be working well into the second sock and looking forward to more pleasing projects ahead, I’m being vindictive. This yarn will not just be bent into a sock shape. Oh, no. It is going to be a damn fine sock, that fits correctly and doesn’t have stupid construction problems. In short, it will be perfect. Even if it kills me.

Which means I will likely have to frog half the sock.

There are two glaring problems, and they are annoying the hell out of me. The heel flap only covers about 2/3 of my heel and the toes? The toes are even worse. Normally, I’d just shrug and figure that no one would really notice. But right now? It’s all I can notice. And it will be corrected.

*pants*

Quick! Give me yarn!

The Saga Continues - Wollmeise

That is a skein of Wollmeise, and I can already feel my blood pressure dropping again. For those that don’t know (for shame!), Wollmeise is an independently dyed yarn made in Germany. You can find it, for a few hours every now and again, over at The Loopy Ewe. Otherwise, you need to order it directly from Claudia’s website, in Germany. This particular skein is Wilder Mohn, and yes, it really is that bright. Further, the skein is 150 grams, and in impressive 574 yards. That’s an awful lot of yarn. I think this might be the yarn, the one destined to become Twisted Flower Socks, by Cookie A.

Just as soon as I finish the Stupid Socks. At least they fit the Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrrggghhh.

The Saga Continues - The Beast of Aaaaaaagh

Sock! Arrrggghhh!
